Good morning

With the ever-growing censorship and restrictions on social media, it has become harder and harder to keep in touch with those who remain in Russia. For me, it’s my mum, aunt, and grandmother. In the past year, we’ve created a ritual. When I wake up and think of them, I take a photo of the mountains which I can see from my bedroom window and send it via family chat with wishes for a good day.

The embroidery, which now frames the view of the Lions, known as Ch’ích’iyúy Elx̱wíḵn (“The Twin Sisters”) in the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh language, reads “Good morning, my dearest”, as I contemplate the question of connections and their care and maintenance.
